This presentation by Mr. Mark deBoer of Akita International University used his PhD reseach to define the term ecological dynamic assessment (eDA). The presenter first introduced two dynamic assessment theories (interventionist and interactionist) and discussed them from a Vygotskian point of view. Next, the ecology of the classroom, both online and face-to-face was discussed with respect to learner agency and appropriation, and how a tools-and-results activity could be used to create a collaborative environment. Online learner dialogue was shown, revealing instances of collaboration and dynamic assessment using both language and content. Ecological DA brings new possibilities for educators looking to increase levels of agency in an online environment, and also to help learners acquire life skills that they can apply outside the classroom.
A fun Autumn time was had by all.
