November presentation:

“From Comparison to Integration: Exploring Hybrid Feedback
Models in EFL Speaking Instruction”

Presenter: HUANG MENGQI

Bio: Huang Mengqi, born and raised in Shanghai, is currently a PhD
student at Yamaguchi University, enrolled in the Graduate School of
Science and Technology for Innovation. Her major is Systems and
Design Engineering. She earned her first master’s degree in English
Language Teaching from Akita International University in March
2020 and her second in Management of Technology from
Yamaguchi University in September 2023. Before starting her
doctoral studies, she taught English for 15 years.

Abstract:
As artificial intelligence (AI) technologies continue to shape
educational practices, the integration of AI tools like ChatGPT into
English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction is gaining global
momentum. This presentation introduces a recent mixed-methods
study conducted at a Chinese university that investigates how EFL
learners perceive AI-generated feedback compared to traditional
teacher feedback in oral communication tasks. Drawing on
quantitative survey results and qualitative coding of open-ended
responses, the study identifies the strengths and limitations of each
feedback type, with particular attention to clarity, emotional
resonance, and pedagogical value.
The findings reveal that while AI offers immediacy and autonomy, it
falls short in emotional sensitivity and contextual
adaptation—domains where teacher feedback excels. Based on these
insights, the presentation proposes a hybrid feedback model that
strategically combines AI’s accessibility with the nuanced support of
human instructors. The implications for Japanese higher education
will also be discussed, especially in terms of how teacher-AI
collaboration can enhance oral English proficiency and reduce
instructor workload in large EFL classrooms.

This talk aims to foster dialogue around best practices, technological
integration, and the future of speaking instruction in Asian EFL
contexts.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, November 23rd, from 3:00 pm to 4:00pm.

All Akita Jalt members will receive an e-mail with the zoom information before the presentation.
