Akita JALT September: From IUHW to Akita: Advancing Medical Interpreting and English Education By Dr. Mieko Sakamoto

The presenter talks about her teaching experience at the previous university, the
International University of Health and Welfare (IUHW). In the presentation, the past two
classes are mainly introduced: 1) Medical Interpreting (90 min.×15 times per semester,
basic level); 2) Medical Interpreting Workshops (one-day program in summer and winter
vacations for the five-year, undergraduate students of pharmaceutical sciences major). In
addition, English education in this semester (April to July, 2025) at Akita Prefectural
University is introduced in this presentation.

Bio

Dr. Mieko Sakamoto, an Associate Professor at Akita Prefectural University, has an extensive academic background in English education and TESOL, supported by diverse international and domestic experiences. She earned her Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English education from Akita University, followed by a Master’s in TESOL from the University of Edinburgh. She later completed her Ph.D. in International Studies at Utsunomiya University and pursued further specialization through the 2e Certificate Program at the Bridges Graduate School of Cognitive Diversity in Education in the United States. Professionally, Dr. Sakamoto began her career as a full-time high school English teacher in Ibaraki before transitioning to higher education, serving as an Assistant Professor and later Lecturer at the International University of Health and Welfare. Since 2024, she has been contributing her expertise to Akita Prefectural University, combining her research interests with a commitment to advancing language education.

The presentation will be on September 6th (Saturday) from 1pm to 2pm through ZOOM.
